What to Expect in Your Newborn Photography Session

Welcoming a new baby is one of life’s most precious moments, and your newborn session is designed to be calm, comfortable and completely centred around your little one. Every part of the experience is guided by safety, gentleness and patience, ensuring your baby feels secure while we capture those tiny details you’ll treasure forever.

A Calm, Baby‑Led Environment

Newborns thrive in a warm, peaceful space, so the studio is set up to feel cosy and soothing from the moment you arrive. Sessions are entirely baby‑led — there is no rush, no pressure and no expectation for bub to “perform.”

Because every baby is different, session lengths can vary depending on how bub is feeling on the day. I work slowly and gently, following your baby’s cues and allowing plenty of time breaks whenever needed. Some babies settle quickly, while others need extra cuddles, feeds or breaks. All of this is normal, and the session simply flows around your baby’s needs.

Safety First, Always

Your baby’s safety is the highest priority. Every pose, wrap and prop is chosen with care, and I only use techniques that support your baby’s natural flexibility and comfort. I am trained in newborn safety and handling, and I continually update my knowledge to ensure each session meets current industry standards.

A little peek behind the scenes:

Any images where baby appears to be supporting their own head are created safely using two separate photos — one with support from a parent’s hands at the top of the head, and one with support underneath. These images are then carefully combined during editing.

Please rest assured that babies are never left unsupported at any time, and there will always be a pair of hands close by to keep your little one safe.

What Happens During the Session

Newborn sessions typically include a mix of wrapped, unwrapped and detail‑focused images. Depending on your chosen package, we may also include parent portraits and sibling photos. Babies between 5–20 days old are usually sleepier and more settled, which allows for those beautifully curled, “squishy” poses — but older newborns are just as welcome, and the session will simply be adapted to suit their comfort and abilities.

Mini Sessions:

Mini sessions are available for babies up to 2 months old; however, depending on their size and flexibility, some poses or wraps may not be possible. Even so, I’ll always adapt the session to suit your baby and capture that newborn magic in a way that feels safe and natural for them.

How to Prepare Before Your Session

A little preparation can help the session run smoothly and keep bub content throughout:

  • Feed close to arrival — A full tummy helps your baby feel relaxed and sleepy.
  • Keep bub lightly dressed — A zip‑up onesie makes transitions easier without waking them.
  • Bring comfort items — Pacifiers, favourite blankets, extra bottles or anything that soothes your baby.
  • Expect breaks — Feeding, settling and cuddles are a normal part of the process.
  • Plan for warmth — The studio will be heated to keep bub comfortable during outfit changes and unwrapped poses.

What to Bring (and What You Don’t Need To)

The studio provides wraps, outfits, blankets and props. You only need:

  • Nappies
  • Extra bottles
  • Dummy (if used)
  • A sentimental item if you’d like it included
  • A spare outfit for yourself (just in case)

Timing & Scheduling

Most families book while still pregnant, and we confirm your session once baby arrives. The ideal window for classic newborn posing is 5–14 days old, but beautiful images are possible at any age — they simply look a little different.

When booking, we will choose a tentative date around two weeks after your due date. If baby arrives early or late, you’ll have priority to reschedule so the session aligns with their routine. Newborn life can be unpredictable, and flexibility is always built into the process.

Feeding & Settling Are Expected

Most of the session time isn’t spent photographing — it’s feeding, settling, cuddling, changing and waiting for baby to drift off. Breaks are expected and completely normal.

Please don’t try to keep baby awake before the session. This often leads to overtiredness and fussiness. Let bub follow their natural rhythm.

A Relaxed, Supportive Experience

My goal is to make your newborn session a peaceful, enjoyable experience. You don’t need to worry about how baby will behave — I’ve worked with many little ones, and every newborn is unique. Whether bub sleeps soundly or needs extra cuddles, the session will unfold naturally and beautifully.
